Grammar Translation Method as Deliberate Practice Workshop

This workshop will focus on Interpreting Theory such as the Cokely Model and related miscues. The participants will learn about Syntactical Analysis of English, Syntactical Analysis of ASL, the grammar translation method and how to use comparative grammar. Hands on practice will also be provided.

Participants will be able to explain the Cokely Model of interpreting, to implement elements of the Cokely Model in deliberate practice, be able to accurately identify and discreetly fix miscues in deliberate practice. Participants will also be able to accurately identify parts of speech in English and ASL and be able to compare the differences between English and ASL syntax/grammar. In the same way, participants will be able to identify the differences between English and ASL syntax/grammar as applied to deliberate practice and understand and apply the grammar translation method in deliberate practice. This workshop will be presented in ASL.

Target level for the workshop is all level interpreters and ITP students. Register and pay at the door. CEUs, CMPs and certificates are only provided to those who attend the whole workshop. Refunds are not applicable. Scholarships are available. The workshop atmosphere will promote an environment of mutual respect, non-discrimination and free from bias.
